Friends rally to raise $1,000 for school supplies
On October 20, 2020, a newly formed alliance, the Alliance for Greater Good, donated $1,000 in gift cards to the City of Portsmouth’s Back to School Drive which provides school supplies for children in need.
Their inaugural event, Yoga @ Sunset, took place on the grounds of the beautiful Wentworth Coolidge Mansion on September 29. The weather cooperated as participants looked out over Little Harbor with the sun setting and the moon rising. The yoga class was led by Kathryn Garcia, one of the co-founders of the Alliance and a yoga instructor currently teaching classes at the YMCA of the Seacoast.
"...I am so thankful that you (the Alliance) are focused on the important job of caring for others during these crazy times..."
Wendy Joanis, one of the participants and a local schoolteacher commented, "The Yoga @ Sunset event was the best part of my week. I am so thankful that you are focused on the important job of caring for others during these crazy times. It felt good to know we were supporting a great cause while enjoying a beautiful night of self-care."
The Alliance for Greater Good, a collaboration among four friends—Kathryn Garcia, Julie Johnson, Lisa Vivinetto and Joanne Wolfe—brainstormed ideas to combine their collective time and talents to support those community members and organizations in need right now. The co-founders held their initial meeting on August 25, 2020. A little more than one month later, they held a successful fundraiser where voluntary contributions averaged $50 per donation. During these unprecedented times, mobilizing the kindness and generosity of others proved to be rewarding for all.
