A Night of Light and Community: Lantern Festival 2024

Hundreds gathered at this year’s Lantern Festival, a vibrant celebration filled with joy and creativity. Attendees decorated lanterns, danced, enjoyed face painting, captured memories at the photo booth, and savored delicious treats from Moe's Italian Sandwiches and the Whoo(pie) Wagon. The evening truly was a “glowing success,” with the Alliance for Greater Good surpassing its fundraising goal by raising $29,500 to support those facing housing insecurity through its partnership with Womenaid of Greater Portsmouth.

“Team members from Lighthouse Credit Union were honored to participate in the 2024 Lantern Festival & Fundraiser at the South Mill Pond in Portsmouth, NH, hosted by the Alliance for Greater Good. The event was a glowing success, filled with beautifully decorated lanterns, inspiring moments, and incredible community support to help prevent homelessness. As a community, over $25,000 was raised for Womenaid of Greater Portsmouth to use towards supporting individuals facing housing challenges.”                                                                                                      -Lighthouse Credit Union

The festival featured highlights such as a lively “Cha Cha Slide” dance-off led by DJ Skooch, followed by inspiring words from Mayor Deaglan McEachern. As night fell, the anticipation grew for the magical moment of launching lighted lanterns across the pond. The mayor and his family had the honor of initiating this beautiful tradition, as volunteers helped light and float their lanterns on the South Mill Pond. Soon, the waters were aglow with hundreds of illuminated lanterns, creating a breathtaking spectacle.

Over 80 dedicated volunteers contributed to making the festival a resounding success. This year, the Alliance was especially thrilled to welcome volunteers from local sponsors, including Aland Realty and WIN Waste Innovations, alongside their passionate supporters.

The Alliance extends heartfelt gratitude to the Seacoast community for its generosity and kindness towards neighbors facing homelessness. Special thanks also go to Womenaid of Greater Portsmouth for their ongoing efforts to provide short-term financial assistance to those in need. Together, we can illuminate the path towards a brighter future for everyone in our community.
